Using the HelpNDoc MCP server with Claude Code
HelpNDoc includes a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that lets Claude Code access HelpNDoc features and work with your documentation projects.
Prerequisites
Claude Code must be installed locally on the same Windows computer as HelpNDoc. Download and install Claude Code by following Anthropic's official instructions: Install Claude Code
After installation, open a Windows terminal and run the following command to confirm that Claude Code is available:
claude --version
Configure the HelpNDoc MCP server port
The HelpNDoc MCP server uses port 8933 by default.
To review or change this port:
- Select "File", then "Options".
- Select "Artificial Intelligence (AI)".
- Locate the "MCP Server" section.
- Enter the required port number in the "Port" field.
The port configured in Claude Code must match the port configured in HelpNDoc.
Start the HelpNDoc MCP server
To start the server:
- Open the "Tools" ribbon tab.
- Locate the "Services" group.
- Click "Start MCP server".
Once the server is running, the command changes to "Stop MCP server". Click it to stop the server manually.
The MCP server also stops automatically when HelpNDoc is closed.
Register HelpNDoc in Claude Code
Keep HelpNDoc running with its MCP server started.
Open Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt and enter:
claude mcp add --transport http HelpNDoc http://localhost:8933/mcp
When another port is configured in HelpNDoc, replace 8933 with that port number.
Claude Code confirms when the server configuration has been added.
Check the connection
To display all registered MCP servers and their connection status, run:
claude mcp list
To display the configuration for the HelpNDoc server, run:
claude mcp get HelpNDoc
The server should appear as connected. When it cannot connect, verify that:
- HelpNDoc is running.
- "Start MCP server" has been clicked.
- The port numbers match.
- No firewall or security application is blocking the local connection.
Inspect HelpNDoc tools in Claude Code
Start Claude Code:
claude
Within the Claude Code interface, enter:
/mcp
The MCP panel displays the registered servers and their current status. Select "HelpNDoc" to inspect the server and its available capabilities.
You can also ask Claude directly:
List the tools available from the HelpNDoc MCP server and briefly explain what each tool does.
Claude Code can discover MCP tools as they are needed, so tools might not all be loaded into the conversation immediately.
Use HelpNDoc from Claude Code
Use natural-language instructions in the Claude Code interface. Clearly mention HelpNDoc, the open project, and the action to perform.
For example:
- Use HelpNDoc to describe the currently open project and list its available topics.
- Use the HelpNDoc MCP server to find the topic named "Getting Started".
- Use HelpNDoc to create a new topic named "Installation" in the appropriate location.
- Review the structure of the open HelpNDoc project and suggest improvements. Do not make changes until I approve them.
- Update the selected HelpNDoc topic using the following content: ...
Claude selects and calls the appropriate HelpNDoc tools. Depending on your Claude Code permission settings, you might be asked to approve a tool before it runs.
For safer operation, first ask Claude to inspect the project or explain its proposed changes. Then explicitly authorize it to modify the project.
Stop the server
When the integration is no longer needed, open the "Tools" ribbon tab in HelpNDoc and click "Stop MCP server". The server also stops automatically when HelpNDoc is closed.
