Step-by-step guide: How to convert an ePub eBook to a PDF or Word DocX document

You can use HelpNDoc to convert an ePub eBook into a PDF or Word document. The PDF and Word documents contain not only the content from the ePub file, but also the images, hyperlinks and organizational structure, including the table of contents. After importing the ePub file, you have the option of updating the content.

Import ePub eBook files

Step 1

Click Import on the File menu.

This displays the ‘Import files and folders’ window.


Browse files to import

Step 2

To navigate to the file that you’d like to import, click the button to the far right.
This displays a window that allows you to locate the document.

Select the ePub file and then click Open.
This displays the path to that document on your page.

Then, click Import.
This imports the selected ePub eBook into your project.


Maintain the table of contents

At this point, you can update the content of the project. Three options are outlined below:

You can add new topics, rename existing topics, remove topics, and modify their order.

You can update the content as well as images and hyperlinks contained in each topic. You can also check spelling.

You can access your library, a centralized storage area that contains all of the multimedia files (e.g. images, photographs, videos, documents, HTML code, variables, and snippets) that are shared across the entire project.

Quick generation of Word DocX and PDF documents

Step 3

Click the lower half of Generate help in the Home ribbon tab.

This displays a menu of publishing outputs.

Select PDF Documentation or Word Documentation.

This generates PDF or Word documentation of your eBook file.


Customize PDF settings

Step 3 Alternatives

You have two alternatives for customizing your documentation. To use either, click the top half of Generate help in the Home ribbon tab.

This displays the ‘Generate documentation’ window.

Option 1: Customize PDF Document

To access the advanced PDF settings, select pdf documentation in your build list.

If the PDF settings tab is not displayed, click Customize.

After you update the settings, click Generate to publish the PDF document.

Option 2: Customize Word DocX Document

To access the Word DocX settings, select Word documentation in your build list.

If the Word settings are not displayed, click Customize.

After you update the settings, click Generate to publish the Word document.

This displays a summary.

Click the link to view your document.


ePub eBooks are great for reading purposes but the format might not be handled by all devices. Thanks to HelpNDoc, it is trivial to import it, modify it, and export it to another format such as a Word document or a PDF file.
