The Generate Documentation dialog provides full control over how your documentation is built and published. You can access this dialog from the Home ribbon tab by clicking the top part of the Generate Help button (not the arrow). All enabled builds listed in this dialog will be generated one by one in the defined order.

Manage build list

The Build list in the Generate Documentation dialog provides an overview of all the builds defined in the project. From here, you can manage each build individually:

  • Create builds - Add a new build to generate documentation in a selected format.
  • Modify builds - Update the properties or settings of an existing build.
  • Duplicate builds - Copy an existing build to quickly create a similar configuration.
  • Delete builds - Permanently remove a build from the project.

You can also control how builds behave during generation:

  • Enable or disable builds - Toggle whether a build should be included in the generation process. Disabled builds remain available for later use but are skipped when generating documentation.
  • Reorder builds - Adjust the order of builds in the list. The sequence defines the order in which documentation outputs are generated when multiple builds are executed at once.

This functionality allows you to maintain an organized and flexible set of documentation outputs, tailored to different audiences, platforms, or distribution requirements.

You can define the outputs that are generated when you publish your documentation. After you've created a publishing output, it is displayed in your build list. When you publish your documentation, it is displayed with its assigned name. To support your specific requirements, you may update this name for any output at any time.

You can define the order of your outputs in your build list. This order determines the order in which your documentation is generated. This order can also dictate which settings are applied when you publish documentation using 'Quick generate.'

HelpNDoc gives you the flexibility and control to determine which of your builds are published when you generate documentation. When you enable a build, it is generated when you use your build list. You also have the option to temporarily disable a build to prevent it from being generated. This flexibility permits you to maintain builds in your build list without requiring you to publish them each time you generate documentation.
